I'm a dad. Full stop. Simple as that. Nothing out of the ordinary. Except for the fact that, during 2013, I took four months of Additional Paternity Leave (now Shared Parental Leave) to look after my children. At the end of that time, the thought of going back to work full-time, and losing out on quality time with the kids, was a bit depressing. Luckily I was able to negotiate flexible working with my employer and got to spend an extra half day with my children during the working week.
It still wasn't quite enough however so when our long term live-in nanny left us in the summer of 2016, I decided to quit the rat race once and for all and now split my time between being the primary carer for my kids and some self-employed consultancy work (mainly from home but with a few days of travel per month).
Doing the above has not only had huge benefits for me and my children but my relationship with my wife has also improved. Everything is now more balanced.
In my opinion this ought to be the norm but, so far, it's not.
This website shares my experience of trying to be a hands-on dad and hopefully provides some encouragement for other dads to do the same.
